Stockton Theatre Project ’07 and Delta Center for the Arts Present:
Sylvia
By A. R. Gurney
Directed by John White
Opens Friday, June 29th in the Studio Theatre at Delta College
And two performances in Lodi at Hutchens Square
Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career as an English teacher is beginning to offer more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing the name "Sylvia.” A street-smart Lab and Poodle mix, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. Sylvia offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of this job and middle age. To Kate, Sylvia is a rival for affection. Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise. Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives. The story of SYLVIA is one intended for mature audiences.
SYLVIA first performed at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 1995 with Sarah Jessica Parker leading the cast as Sylvia, with Charles Kimbrough and Blythe Danner as Greg and Kate.
This year’s production will perform in two different spaces. From June 29th through Sunday, July 8th SYLVIA will perform in Delta College’s Studio Theatre. Two additional performances will be offered in the Thomas Theatre in Lodi’s Hutchens Square on Saturday, July 14th.
Delta College’s Drama Department has been working with the Lodi Arts Commission to perform SYLVIA in Lodi after its run at Delta College. These performances in Lodi come from a desire by the Stockton Theatre Project to explore new opportunities to take our Drama program beyond the campus and into the surrounding communities.
