Delta College Livestock Judging Team Wins Again!
(Stockton, CA)– San Joaquin Delta College’s livestock judging team recently won the Overall Team Championship at the Grand National Cow Palace Stock Show in San Francisco. Delta defeated other Community College teams from California, Oregon, Wyoming, Kansas and Georgia. This year’s team was led by John Avellar, Jesse Becket, Brenden Benson, Matt Hayes, Fidel Saurez and Jacob Thorne.
Delta College students were rated “High Team” in beef, sheep, swine and oral reason judging, winning by over 100 points. Livestock judging consists of carefully analyzing animals and measuring them against a standard that is commonly accepted as being ideal.
Delta College Animal Science instructor Ben Beam says there are numerous benefits to gain from competing on a livestock judging team. “In the course of training and competition, you are given the opportunity to interact with future leaders of the livestock industry. You develop a keen sense of livestock judgment and the confidence to make decisions you must defend.”
Beam likes to enter his teams in a variety of state and national competitions, showing off the quality of Delta’s instruction. He says Delta’s Animal Science program prepares students for the realities of the livestock industry. “Most prominent livestock people are masters of judgment and selection. Students must learn the relationship between an animal’s form and function.” Beam feels participation on a livestock judging team “builds character and makes you a more complete person. This is what we strive to do at Delta College.”
He leaves us with this final thought from distinguished Michigan State Animal Science professor Harlan Ritchie: “Judging instills the confidence in those people who may be timid and humbles those who tend to be conceited.”
