INSPIRATION- Fashion Design and Interior Design on Display
(Stockton, CA, April 25, 2007)- INSPIRATION defined: Arousal of the mind to special unusual activity or creativity, a product of creative thinking and work, a sudden intuition as part of solving a problem; synonyms- awakening, big idea, creativity, illumination, spark, stimulus, vision.
The Fashion and Interiors programs at San Joaquin Delta College will host their annual exhibit of student work in Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design.
This year’s theme: Inspiration.
“Inspiration” will be held on Thursday evening, May 10, 2007 from 5:00-7:00 pm in Danner Hall on the Delta College Campus. Refreshments will be served and a DJ will spin music throughout the evening. There is no admission charge!
Students will display their talents and creativity in specific work such as fashion design, accessory design, fashion illustration, fashion advertising, cultural and ethnic costume, visual merchandising, and interior design.
This year’s event will feature two exciting and unique fashion design competitions:
First, T-shirt design, where students take ordinary white T-shirts and redesign them into a variety of fashionable tops, skirts, handbags and bikinis. The second competition features garments designed with fashion capital New York City as inspiration. Garments from this category will be judged by industry professionals. The T-shirt competition will be judged by the attending public. Winners of these competitions will receive cash scholarships.
Attendees will have the opportunity to talk with student designers, view information about Delta’s Fashion and Interiors program and learn about creations from current students and those now working in the fashion and interiors industries.
Hosting the event is the Delta College Fashion Club, an organization of students interested in experiencing and exploring the fashion industry. The Club hosts events such as the semi-annual Art and Gift Fairs on campus, the Nearly New Sales, and the annual fashion industry tours to San Francisco and New York.
During the spring semester, the fashion students received a private tour of Bloomingdale’s new flagship store in San Francisco. They learned first-hand the specifics of store design and the intricacies of running a multi-million dollar retail establishment from the store manager, Alan Svensen.
This year’s New York Fashion Tour is set for June 4th. Students will meet influential industry professionals from companies like Ralph Lauren, Henri Bendels, Kate Spade, Rootstein Mannequins, Trend Union Forecasting Company and more.
Students will tour upscale stores like Henri Bendels and Bergdorf Goodman, then participate in one-on-one workshops with trend forecasters, color specialists and top designers. In past years, the students had the opportunity to meet personally with top designers like Kenneth Cole and Betsey Johnson. They have one-on-one workshops with trend forecasters, color specialists, and buyers who select thousands of lines for exclusive clientele.
The participants spend time with former Delta College students Like Jennavave Barbero, who works in the NYC fashion industry. Jennavave was hired as the lead designer for BCBG and Ellen Tracy outerwear. She designed for Calvin Klien Collections, and is now design director for Tiger J LLC. The students have the opportunity to hear how she made it from Stockton to NYC, becoming successful in an incredibly competitive industry.
Delta College fashion instructor Leslie Asfour has been conducting this tour for ten years. With over 18 years in the industry, she has extensive contacts and custom-designs the tour to include appointments with friends and family in the fashion business. Leslie strives to provide students with experiences that will resonate throughout their careers. “The trip is an invaluable experience for students. They have the opportunity to meet with leaders in the fashion business, go into design rooms of the major designers in America and meet closely with trend forecasters and fashion recruiters. They observe the fashion world from a vantage point that others rarely have the opportunity to see. Delta students take away an education that cannot be provided in the classroom.”
The Fashion Program at Delta College is exceptional. The instructors all have extensive industry experience. The program boasts the best equipped sewing rooms in education, with over 60 machines of industry-quality. The program also has computerized patternmaking software, plotters, wide-format textile printers, state-of-the-art pressing centers and more!
