State allocates 30-million for Cunningham Science Center at San Joaquin Delta College!

(Stockton, CA) San Joaquin Delta College recently received good news from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. The State is allocating approximately $30-million dollars from revenue generated by Proposition 1D to fast track the planning and construction of a new state of the art science and math facility on San Joaquin Delta College’s scenic Stockton campus.

California’s Proposition 1D which passed in a statewide election in 2006 secured more than 10.4 billion dollars from the sale of general obligation bonds. The funds were intended in part to repair and upgrade existing public college and university buildings and to build new classrooms to accommodate the growing student enrollment in the California Community College system.

“This is fantastic news for our current expansion and renewal plans,” says Raul Rodriguez, Superintendent/President of San Joaquin Delta College. “To fully fund the Cunningham science and math facility, we thought we were going to have to wait until 2008 when the next statewide bond measure would most likely appear.”

The new building is currently estimated to cost approximately $61-million dollars with the newly secured funds to cover about half of the total. The balance of the project will be funded from money raised by Measure L, a general obligation bond passed by voters of the college’s district in 2004.

The Cunningham Science Center will house state-of-the-art lab spaces with improved ventilation and architectural advances which will provide a superior science and math learning environment. Modern laboratory and class spaces are necessary to meet new building codes and the increased demand for growth. These enhancements are in keeping with Delta College’s long standing reputation as a leader in providing top quality educational opportunities to its students and to the community.

Rodriguez sums up the importance of the facility. “This project will ensure that San Joaquin Delta College plays an important role in California’s science community for years to come.”
