San Joaquin Delta College:

Jazz Ensemble to open for Capital Jazz Project

(Stockton, CA) – The music of famed trumpeter Woody Shaw will be featured in a concert by Capital Jazz Project on Sunday, October 22 at 7 p.m. at the Delta College Tillie Lewis Theatre.   The Capital Jazz Project, formed in 1997, includes five stellar Sacramento area musicians.   The group has played with a wide range of guest artists and will be joined by trumpeter Warren Gale, Jr., for this performance.

Gale is one of the most important and creative musicians to emerge from Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.  His improvisational abilities on the trumpet along with his vast experience have brought him to a position of pre-eminence as one of the most innovative musicians.  His unique abilities as an improviser, arranger and composer have made him indispensable to many of the greatest jazz artists in history.  Warren has worked with the original Joe Henderson/Kenny Dorham Big Band, Stan Kenton Band, Buddy Rich Band, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. and Sarah Vaughn.

In 1998, as part of its commitment to young upcoming jazz musicians, the Capital Jazz Project established the Jazz Mentor Program and this concert will feature the sounds of the San Joaquin Delta College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Brian Kendrick, as the opening band.  The mission of CJP is to create an atmosphere of respect for jazz as a high level art form, equal to classical music and other ethnic music and to present repertoire that is diverse and representative of the complete history of the genre.  Visit their website at www.capitaljazzproject.com.  Tickets are on sale now through the Delta Center for the Arts:  $12 for Adults, $8 for students.  Children 2 and under are admitted free.  You can also purchase tickets online at dca.deltacollege.edu.

A free clinic, open to the public will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Tillie Lewis Theatre the day of the performance.  For more information about this performance, call 954-5110.
