Delta College to Present Ninth Annual Invitational Jazz Festival

 

(Stockton, CA) – San Joaquin Delta College hosts the 9th Annual Invitational Jazz Festival on Friday, Feb. 24.   On Atherton Auditorium stage from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., 16 area high school jazz ensembles will participate in concert and adjudication.  At 1 p.m., Bob McChesney (trombone) will present a free clinic concert along with the Brubeck Fellows. The evening concert at 7:30 p.m., features concert performances by SJDC jazz ensembles under the direction of Brian Kendrick and Mel Won and guest artists Bob McChesney and Patrick Langham (saxophone).

 

Conn-Selmer Artist Bob McChesney was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and began studying the trombone at the age of nine. In 1979, Bob moved to Los Angeles where he remains, working as a studio musician and in a wide variety of musical situations including film, television, records, jingles and can be heard on recent CD recordings by Ray Charles - his Grammy Album of the Year 2005 "Genius Loves Company" (tracks with James Taylor and Gladys Knight), Grammy 2000 winner Diana Krall - "When I Look In Your Eyes", Shakira, Michael Buble', Kenny G, Barry Manilow, Chicago's "Night and Day- Big Band", Natalie Cole's "Snowfall on the Sahara", Rod Stewart (American Songbook II).

 

As a jazz soloist, McChesney is featured on Horace Silver's first album for Sony/Columbia Records "Its Got To Be Funky", Bob Florence's Grammy 2000 winning CD "Serendipity 18", and Florence's "Earth" and "All the Bells and Whistles" and on Randy Waldman's latest on Concord "Unreel". He has performed live with Arturo Sandoval, Nancy Wilson, Kenny G, The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Patti Austin, Stanley Clarke, Robb McConnell, Lalo Schifrin, Tony Bennett, The Tom Scott Bebop Sextet and Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. Tickets are available through the Delta Center for the Arts Box Office:  954-5110.  The Box Office is open Tuesday – Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Phone/mail orders will be charged a $3 handling fee.  Cash, check, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express cards are accepted.  All events take place in Atherton Auditorium. Daytime events including the clinic are free.  Cost for the 7:30 p.m., concert is $7.50 for adults and $5 students and seniors.
