‘Big Band Jazz’ to Permeate the Air at Delta College

(Stockton, CA) – Enjoy the sounds of classic Big Band Jazz at the San Joaquin Delta College Jazz concert Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tillie Lewis Theatre.  The performance includes the great sounds of Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson and Billie Holiday.

Two Delta combos, Expressions and Combo Six, will perform selections including the Johnny Mercer tune Autumn Leaves and Stevie Wonder’s Wonder Medley.   The Monday Night Jazz Band under the direction of Mel Won will feature jazz vocalist Patrick Teczon performing the Roberta Flack classic Killing Me Softly.  The final group of the evening is the San Joaquin Delta College Jazz Ensemble directed by Brian Kendrick.  Katie Quigg sings Tuxedo Junction and the band plays a variety of well-known big band jazz classics including Night in Tunisia and God Bless the Child.

Director Brian Kendrick has performed as a percussionist throughout the U.S. and Europe in both jazz and orchestral settings and has appeared with such eminent artists as Henry Mancini, Sarah Vaughn and Ernie Watts.  Kendrick also teaches at CSU, Stanislaus, directs the Young Sounds of San Joaquin (Northern California’s Central Valley all-star high school jazz band) and is on the faculty of Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Camps and Brubeck Jazz Colony.  Monday Night Jazz Director Mel Won has been a well-known band director in Stockton since 1975.  After beginning his career as a trombonist in the 28th Army Band at Fort Ord, Won spent 26 years building the renowned band program at Franklin High School.  As director of the Monday Night Jazz Band at Delta for the last four years he has made it possible for musical performers of all ages to have the rewarding experience of playing in a professional quality jazz band.
